The Role of Silence in Psychological Art
By Sebastien Montel
Silence is often thought of as absence, but in art, it can be a presence all its own. In my paintings, silence becomes the atmosphere that allows emotion to breathe. As a French artist in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, I see silence as essential to my practice in psychological art.
The Space Between Words
In contemporary art, silence functions like negative space: it frames what is there and invites viewers to reflect. In my expressionist art, I often leave gestures unfinished or distort figures to emphasize what remains unspoken. This is where silence becomes powerful.
Silence as Emotion
Emotional art does not always shout; sometimes it whispers. A figure leaning inward, a gesture of hands held but not explained, these moments allow viewers to bring their own interpretations. Silence opens the door for empathy.
Silence in Mixed Media
My mixed media art often integrates blank spaces or subdued tones that suggest restraint. These elements remind us that silence is not emptiness, but a form of presence. It is the breath that carries weight without sound.
Silence in art is not about saying nothing, it is about creating space for the viewer to listen to themselves.
